Many visitors who flocked to the Mother City during the recent FIFA World Cup had their first taste of Cape Town travel – giving them a glimpse into one of the world’s most popular travel destinations. Famous for its towering mountain, beautiful people, equally beautiful beaches, spectacular scenery, friendly locals, diverse culture and laid-back nature, Cape Town is a favourite with celebrities and regular folk alike, and for good reason. To get the authentic Cape Town experience, why not consider these dos and don’ts of travel in Cape Town:
DO…
Take a walk down Long Street for a taste of local culture at its best – browse the many antique, fashion, book, art and food stores, stop for a coffee or drink at a sidewalk cafe and enjoy the lively sense of street-style boho chic.
Climb Table Mountain, or take the Cable Car to get a glimpse of the breathtaking views of the city from the top of the mountain.
Take a drive to the Cape Winelands to sample award-winning wines and visit the excellent wine estates of the Cape.
Try a boat cruise to Robben Island (to see Nelson Mandela’s jail cell and learn more about the history of the island), Seal Island (to see the Cape’s largest colony of seals, and possibly even a Great White shark breach!) or the entire Atlantic Seaboard (for a tour of this beautiful coastline).
Visit the District Six Museum, the South African National Museum, the Apartheid Museum and the Bo Kaap Museum to learn more about the Cape’s history.
Have a picnic at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens – and catch a live open-air concert in the summer months.
Don’t…
1. Keep valuables and cameras in plain sight when walking in busier areas – this can prove all too tempting for opportunists. Keep valuables locked up safely and be cautious.
2. Be tempted to give money to the street children you see – heartbeaking as they are. Instead, visit The Homestead or one of the other many organisations working to help street children, and support the work that these groups are doing.
3. Ever attempt to hike Table Mountain alone, without a map or Cape Town tour guide. Hikers can easily get lost, fall or get stuck and with the weather turning within minutes it can be very easy to lose your bearings on the mountain.
4. Leave your belongings on the beach while you swim – always ensure that someone stays to guard your bags, and take turns to keep things safe.
Whether you opt for a full day tour, or short tours in Cape Town; make sure to try these dos and don’ts to get the most from you trip.
